This garden in Norfolk, England, is located in a beautiful countryside setting surrounded by open fields and farm land. It was already a well maintained and much loved garden. However, an area of open lawn in the largest portion of the garden lacked both interest and connection with the rest of the garden.

Creating a unified garden design

The final design was based on two circular areas of paving joined with a cobble stone path. This signified the passageway into the redesigned area of garden and linked with the existing summer house. The larger of the two circles was backed by a low pergola, planted with wisteria and verbena and surrounded with a variety of larger shrubs, grasses and tall perennials. This became a secluded seating spot from which the rest of the garden could be viewed. It filled the central part of the lawn, adding much needed colour and interest. Additional central planting beds also helped create a journey through this area of the garden.

To unify the whole outdoor space, hard landscaping elements from other areas of the garden were incorporated. The new design also considered existing features that were to remain, making sure these fitted in seamlessly.

“Emma transformed our large garden from lawn and borders to a ‘peace garden’ to sit and enjoy the natural world.”

– Shirley and Barry Wells

The new design transformed the space creating a place to escape while watching the changing seasons and movement of wildlife. What was once a vast expanse of lawn is now a colourful journey of exploration and relaxation.
