Green Oasis

Location
Wageningen
Date
June 2023

This new build garden in Wageningen required a slight renovation. Although it was neat and well divided into distinct areas of paving, covered seating and grass, the proportions were off balance and it lacked planting and interest. The greatest proportion of the garden was covered with large grey paving creating a terrace that covered approximately 50% of the total area.

The objective was to create a green oasis with a limited budget.

Adding Greenery

The basic layout of the garden was not drastically altered and all existing seating and planting areas remained. The greatest change was the removal of almost 50% of the paving slabs which was replaced with planting beds and lawn.

A simple pergola archway covered with Trachelospermum jasminoides provided a defined entrance to the lawned area whilst generating height and interest.

The breakfast terrace became an intimate space surrounded by planting with large evergreen Photinia x fraseri shrubs framing the rear house windows.

To keep the budget to a minimum the unwanted paving slabs were sold and a subsidy was offered from the local council for the replacement of paving with greenery.

This simple transformation was created by replacing paving with a beautiful and elegant selection of perennial planting with contrasting statement trees and larger shrubs to provide a more inviting outdoor space.
