Adding the Greenery

Planting is key to a successful garden design, providing structure, form, colour, scent and texture along with offering seasonal appeal. Plants elevate a space, transforming a simple design layout into a magnificent garden. Greenery brings excitement and charm into a garden to create an enticing space. Hard landscaping provides the bare bones of a garden but it only comes to life once the plants are present.

Enjoy the variety

So many combinations!

Outdoor spaces are not static, they are organic and ever changing, offering up new sights and smells to constantly stimulate the senses. Planting needs to reflect this and consider the garden through the passage of time

What is a planting plan?

Planting plans are drawings that detail the garden layout, specifying the individual plants. The drawings show the position of the plant, variety, quantity and spacing and are usually represented by a series of circular symbols with each symbol representing one species of plant. Plant images are provided to help visualise the scheme giving a clear idea of colour, shape and form. Plant species are listed using their Latin name with a brief description.

Benefits of a planting plan
  • A good planting plan will create the desired atmosphere in any outdoor space fitting with its surroundings and blending seamlessly with the natural environment.
  • It can serve to compliment or contrast the hard landscaping and used to soften borders and edges or to emphasize boundaries.
  • It ensures the plants fit with the style of the garden as well as the space available and environmental conditions.
  • Planting works well as a screen for less desirable sights but can also work as window for a beautiful view, blending with the scenery beyond the garden boundaries.
  • A well-considered planting scheme is key to saving time and money.
  • It provides the opportunity to play around with various combinations of plantings prior to buying and planting.
  • It allows for seasonal changes ensuring long term colour and interest while reducing the risk of all plants blooming within a two-week period.
  • A well-planned planting scheme will prevent impulse purchases, ensuring the plants selected will survive within the gardens environmental conditions.
